Director's Workscript
|
This work represents my both my pre-production analysis as well as analysis that took place during the rehearsal process.
As you read through It, the following information may be helpful for synthesizing the work. On the left side of the display, is the script. In the script there are markers for unit breaks. Additionally, there are sticky notes with shorthand about the big ideas of each unit. I used the sticky notes to help guide the blocking rehearsals. The cast and I would briefly discuss the suggestions on each sticky note before beginning the blocking. Then, with the ideas in mind, the cast were allowed to experiment and play with movement and character. On the right side of the display are two sections. In the first, there are set floor plans integrated into the workscript for blocking and set change purposes. In the second, there are three columns: blocking, characters, and big ideas. The blocking column is pretty self-explanatory and has ideas about specific moments and given circumstances, though many of these ideas were not used in favor of what the actors came up with during rehearsal. The middle column, characters, contains analysis and questions about the motivations, personalities, and relationships of the characters in the script. The final column holds information about the bigger ideas of the scene and script. This is also the column where the majority of my initial concept ideas were formed. These analyses were by no means prescriptive when we got into rehearsal but allowed us to ask deeper and more specific questions about the performances we were creating. There may also be a few extraneous notes and markings made throughout the script as a shorthand for the events that were taking place in the play. |
